Georgetown Education Foundation (GEF) Gala preparations in full swing as students create decorations and music for the Safari themed fundraising event
The Georgetown Education Foundation Gala will be especially meaningful this year. Students in the Georgetown School District are hard at work preparing wonderful contributions to this year’s Safari themed event.
Children at Penn Brook are working on signs for the tables as well as creating Adinkra cloth prints. Adrinkra cloth is a hand-printed cloth made in Ghana which was traditionally worn by royalty. Art teacher Dawn Rezendes is using interactive SmartBoard technology to teach the children about Africa and to look at different types of cloths, African animals and cultural traditions. The incorporation of this interactive technology has brought a whole new dimension of learning into the art class.
At the Middle School, sixth graders are working on making African tribal masks and bark cloths while eight graders are creating three-dimensional sculpture monkeys all of which will all be used to decorate the room at the Crowne Plaza Boston North Shore where the event will take place on March 6th.
“The GEF is thrilled to have the students involved in so much of the planning this year as our core mission is to support technology, the arts and science. It’s wonderful to see how the schools have embraced the projects with so much enthusiasm and to know that we will be able to feature all the fabulous creations of our students at the Gala, “ says Sonia Mitchell, Vice President of the Georgetown Education Foundation.
This festive evening will also feature live music from both the high school A Cappella group and the Jazz Band during cocktail hour. Additionally, Georgetown Middle High School band teacher, Corey Seapy will DJ the event after the live music.
The community and schools are coming together at many levels to support the GEF with sponsorships, advertising, auction items and countless hours of time donated by dedicated volunteers.
